f Sea Mar Family Nurse Practitioner Residency

Welcome

Sea Mar Community Health Centers’ Family Nurse Practitioner Residency began at the Sea Mar Seattle Medical Clinic in October of 2015 under the directorship of Patricia Cleveland, ARNP. In 2019 and 2020, the residency was awarded two Health Services and Resource Administration (HRSA) grants, prompting the residency expansion to six residents in 2019 and to ten in 2020. The expansion included the addition of two new clinical sites in Everett and Tacoma, each with three residents. The initial clinical site in Seattle increased to host four residents. The NP residency leadership team welcomed Lindsey Anagnostopoulos, former NP residency graduate, as Everett Site Director in 2019, and Margaret Boyle as Tacoma Site Director in 2020. Margaret Boyle is dual certified as a family nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and leads the behavioral health portion of the residency curriculum. In the summer and fall of 2021 the Everett residents’ home site transitioned from Everett Medical to Sea Mar’s new Lynnwood Medical clinic.

With the incredible support of the Sea Mar organization and surrounding community, Sea Mar’s Family Nurse Practitioner Residency has become a successful and highly-esteemed post-graduate training program. The Family Nurse Practitioner Residency became accredited through the National Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Training Consortium (NNPRFTC) in July 2018, demonstrating its commitment to high-quality and rigorous post graduate training. The program successful went through re-accreditation in 2021 and was granted the full 5-year accreditation.

Sea Mar has long been part of the community and an advocate for educational programs. For many years, the Seattle Medical clinic has been a training site for new providers, welcoming two new physician residents each year from both the Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency since 1987 and the Children’s Pediatric Residency since the early 1990s. As the Nurse Practitioner Residency was under development in 2014, Sea Mar created the Department of Medical Education in an effort to centralize many of the educational and residency programs. Sea Mar also began the Sea Mar sponsored Family Medicine Residency program in Snohomish County in June 2017.

Sea Mar is excited to announce a new Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner post-graduate training program, with two positions available in King County WA, starting October 2024. Sea Mar is now accepting applications; please see the Apply page for additional details.

FNP Residency Clinic Highlights

Seattle Medical

Sea Mar’s Seattle Medical clinic was the very first Sea Mar clinic, opening its doors in 1978. Since then, it has continued to be one of the largest Sea Mar clinics, serving an average of 750 patients per week. The Seattle Medical clinic is located conveniently in the South Park neighborhood in South Seattle, in close proximity to many other Sea Mar facilities. Patients are provided same-day access with their primary care providers. Overflow volumes and new patients are seen through an on-site urgent care clinic. The Seattle Medical Clinic has long had a focus on teaching and hosts various training programs, including the Nurse Practitioner Residency since 2015.

Lynnwood Medical

Newly remodeled Lynnwood Medical opened in July of 2021. Lynnwood reaches a patient population from north Seattle to Lynnwood and surrounding areas. Same day appointment times are available to allow for urgent care visits with primary care providers. The Lynnwood Medical facility also houses Sea Mar Dental and Sea Mar Behavioral Health. The facility will also grow to add a pharmacy soon. In 2021, the ARNP residents moved from Everett Medical to Lynnwood Medical. The residents will be joined by some of their physician resident colleagues in 2022.

Tacoma Medical

Sea Mar expanded services to Pierce County in 1994 with the opening of an inpatient alcohol and substance use treatment center in Tacoma. In 1995, Sea Mar opened the Tacoma Medical clinic and the Tacoma Outpatient Behavioral Health clinics. Dental services have been provided in Tacoma since 1997. The 11th Street clinic was opened in 2017 to assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness with primary care, behavioral health, outpatient substance use treatment, case management, and hygiene services. In 2020, Tacoma Medical became the third clinical site for the Sea Mar ARNP residency program.

Patient-centered care is a priority

Care Management and patient-centered care is a priority at Sea Mar. We strive to be a medical home for patients, tracking their health maintenance and addressing their acute concerns. Health outcomes and preventative health services are monitored and tracked, and patients receive assistance in accessing discounted or free services available to them. In the morning, a chronic care coordinator, medical assistant, and occasionally a health educator or integration specialist all “huddle” with providers to identify patients’ health needs, risk factors, and barriers to care. Point of care services can then be arranged, such as education for diabetes, nutrition, and family planning, referral tracking, tobacco cessation, crisis intervention needs, and/or financial and health insurance assistance.

Procedure clinic

Sea Mar’s attending physicians are paired with a family medicine or nurse practitioner resident during this half-day of appointment designated for procedures at Seattle Medical or Everett Medical clinics. Typical procedures include: toenail excisions, placement and/or removal of long acting contraception, joint injections and aspirations, and skin biopsies/excisions.

Pediatric experience

All three clinical sites (Seattle, Lynnwood, and Tacoma) have pediatric specialists onsite. Pediatric rotations occur throughout the year at the residents’ home clinic. Lynnwood residents also have some pediatric rotations offsite at Seattle Medical or Monroe Medical. Tacoma residents have some pediatric rotations at Sea Mar Lakewood. All residents are offered an elective rotation at Sea Mar’s Adolescent Medicine clinic.

Pediatric care at the Seattle Medical clinic is overseen by Dr. Cor Van Niel and Dr. Christina Pease. Dr. Van Niel is Journal Watch Editor, Swedish Cherry Hill pediatrics instructor, and Children’s Hospital faculty member and former chief resident. Dr. Pease is one of our general pediatricians. She is currently offering autism evaluations and works with other providers within Sea Mar to increase provider education regarding autism diagnosis and treatment. Each Monday, six pediatric physician residents from Seattle Children’s Hospital provide continuity outpatient clinical services at Sea Mar.

Pediatric care at Tacoma medical is led by Dr. Wells and Dr. Shin. Pediatric care at Lynnwood Medical is led by Dr. Movius, who completed her residency at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Sea Mar Seattle Medical.

Specialty Care

Sea Mar has been expanding their specialty services available to their patient population in order to improve specialty care access to patients and provide comprehensive, high quality care. All of the NP residents will rotate with various specialties throughout Sea Mar, including gynecology, sports medicine, cardiology, nephrology, MAT, psychiatry (with either a physician or psychiatric nurse practitioner), and more. Many of these specialties are located in King County at the White Center Specialty and Seattle Medical clinic. External to Sea Mar, NP residents rotate with dermatology NP Brad Jellerichs.

The 12-month program will be based in the community mental health setting, and will include diverse experiences in a structured, comprehensive program. Participants will spend most of their time providing direct mental health care for clients with the support of an experienced psychiatric provider, with additional long-term rotations in pediatrics and the treatment of substance use disorder and other specialty rotations.

The Sea Mar Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Post-Graduate Training program is currently accepting applications, and will be processing applications, offering interviews, and extending offers on an ongoing basis. The application will close once the two positions have been filled.

FAQ

Can I use a clinical preceptor for my professional reference?
Yes, a preceptor may submit a professional reference, given that the preceptor knows you well enough to answer questions about your professionalism, leadership, and communication skills. The preferred professional reference is a colleague, supervisor, or preceptor who has worked with you for more than six months.

Do you require official academic transcripts? How should I submit the transcript?
We accept unofficial academic transcripts, submitted electronically (scanned copy) with the online application. We may request an official academic transcript mailed at a later date.

Do you accept pediatric or adult nurse practitioners into your residency program?
No. The Sea Mar NP residency is limited to Family Nurse Practitioners at this time.

I don’t graduate until August, just a few months before the start of the residency. Should I still apply?
Yes. There may be options to schedule your nurse practitioner licensing exams early to allow you to have active Washington State RN and ARNP licenses prior to the start of the program.
I graduated last year. Can I still apply to the residency?
Maybe. The NP residency is meant for new graduates, ideally within 12 months of graduating from your MSN/DNP program and the start of the residency. Applications received from applicants who graduated prior to those 12 months will be considered at the discretion of the application review team.

Is it acceptable to submit letters of recommendation, in addition to the references who will complete the online forms?
The reference forms are what are included in the application review scoring rubric (the standard way we review all applications). Any additional information received from references (such as a letter of recommendation in addition to the two form references) could be used to get to know you better. However, any extraneous items received will be reviewed at the discretion of the application review team (i.e. reviewers may opt not to look at non-essential documents).

I’m interested in multiple locations. Where would I interview?
Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, all interviews are currently virtual. The Applicant Meet and Greet is also virtual. Applicants will be given access to recorded clinic tours and will be asked to rank their preferred sites.

If I have previous experience working as a nurse practitioner, can I still apply?
The residency program is designed for new graduate nurse practitioners. Previous work experience as a nurse practitioner excludes you from our eligibility criteria.
