Luis A. Herrera earned a Master's degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Florida International University in 2019 and graduated in December, 2020 with a Doctor of Nursing Degree from FIU as well. Luis worked as a cardiac registered nurse at Baptist Hospital of Miami and Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

Luis comes from a family of farmworkers. He was born in Michoacan, Mexico and moved to Yakima, WA at the age of 15. Luis attended high school in Yakima and earned a B.S. in Anthropology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA in 2005. Luis decided to join Teach for America and moved to Miami, FL, where he resided for 15 years before deciding to return to his home state of Washington.
